      “Teachers have a responsibility to inspire people to move from one position to another” (Rice & Yenawine, 2002, p. 291). An educator’s role is not to proclaim how something should be done, but instead, to provide the knowledge and opportunities for the students to intellectually and creatively choose their own path. Looking at and talking about art challenges students to question, think about the past, and apply their discoveries to real world situations. “Art education is an enterprise that encompasses teaching and learning to make and understand art, as well as finding out about the world and ourselves through art” (Feldman, 1996, p. 2). “A contextually oriented art curriculum, then, assumes that art has some purpose beyond being merely decorative or formally adept…” (Sessions, 1999 p.4) Art educators foster critical and inquiry based thinking about ideas and issues students care about. Students are then able to make personal connection with their art in addition to other art and artists in the world.  Art making is a way to discover a sense of self, while making sense of the world. “Real-world motives by definition and of necessity have real-life meaning” (Feldman, 1996. p. 77). Art history provides a resource for a continuous learning experience that is ever changing. “Through the study of art, students connect to people from other times, places, cultures, and backgrounds. They learn to value the various ways in which others perceive and interpret the world” (Dewey, 1934). Art teachers provide the knowledge about materials and processes for students to form art with intent. First, they consider what the child’s interests are and then plan opportunities for exploring materials, experimenting with processes, making choices, making mistakes, and making meaning. The art classroom is both a place to learn and to question.  The results are authentic understanding of art making. As students learn the language of art and apply what they learn to art making, the meaning will naturally manifest in the way the artist intended it to and the audience will understand the creator’s meaning with no question of right or wrong.
